Unions

Dear colleagues

Visit our Schools and Colleges during the week of 18-22 October

Union officers and representatives, and employers, often visit schools to talk to school students about unions and the world of work. A new charity has recently been set up to encourage more such links between the worlds of employment and education – the Education and Employment Taskforce – which has TUC and union support as well as support from many leading employers, schools and colleges. The Taskforce has signed up thousands of schools and colleges who want more visits and involvement.

During the week of 18-22 October employers – from the private, public and third sectors together with unions – are invited to visit state schools throughout the country. It provides a chance to hear from head teachers and young people about their schools, to witness their work at first hand and to discuss how unions and employers can work together to help young people.

This National Campaign, the first of its type, will harness the appetite across schools and colleges to work together by making it easy and simple. Of course visits would be welcome at other times too. Amid the economic challenges facing us all, the campaign offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the work we and our members do to help our young people.

Union officers and representatives, including union learning representatives, would all be welcome to register and be a part of the campaign. Some union learning centres could link up with local schools.

Register to take part.

For those who wish to engage in more sustained work with schools, perhaps by building on an introductory visit, TUC Regions organise training and there are resources available, including a pack of materials called a Better Way to Work. Contact Matt Dykes email: mdykes@tuc.org.uk or visit the Unions in Schools page on the TUC website.
